Obituary for Rev. Frank L. Mathna
Rev. Frank L. Mathna, 88, of Shippensburg, departed this life on the morning of Tuesday, November 14, 2017, at the Holy Spirit Hospital.
He was born on December 17, 1928, in Mongul, a son of the late William Henry and Mary E. Runshaw Mathna. Frank was a 1960 graduate of Huntington University, earning a Bachelor’s in Art and a Bachelor’s in Theology. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War, inducted on November 1, 1950 and honorably discharged on October 16, 1952. Shortly thereafter Frank married Edith J. ‘Dot” Shoop on May 23, 1953 in Hagerstown, MD.
Frank was a minister, serving the United Brethren denomination, for five years at the First United Brethren Church in Van Wert, OH and then for thirty-two years at Park Layne United Brethren in Christ Church in New Carlisle, OH, where he retired from in 1994. He also periodically served as Associate Minister at the Mongul United Brethren Church in Shippensburg.
In his free time, Frank enjoyed golf, practicing woodworking, and playing guitar as member of the Mongul String Band. His greatest joy in life was his large family whom he loved spending time with. Frank will be remembered fondly as a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and man of God.
In addition to his wife of sixty-four years, Dot; he is survived by four daughters, Juanita M. (Rev. Ronald) Watterly of Plainwell, MI, Jeannine M. (Rev. Timothy) Shatzer of Frederick, MD, Nondy E. (Dr. Randy) Smith of Gainsville, FL, and Cyndi A. (Charles) Monroe of New Carlisle, OH; twelve grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Frank was preceded in death by a grandson, Dustin Monroe; three brothers; and two sisters.
His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, November 20, 2017 at the Lurgan United Brethren Church. Pastor Stan V. McCammon will officiate. Interment, with military honors conducted by the Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post #223, will follow in the Mongul Cemetery. Viewing will be Sunday afternoon from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc., Shippensburg and one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church.
