Obituary for Eldon Eugene Holtry Sr.

Eldon Eugene Holtry, Sr., 92, a resident of Elmcroft of Shippensburg, passed away Saturday, November 23, 2019.

Born Thursday, January 13, 1927 in Chambersburg, he was a son of the late Harper and Blanche Gephart Holtry.

Eldon was a graduate of Shippensburg Area High School and an honorably discharged veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in WWII. He worked for the former Penn Fuel as a service technician/installer. After retirement, he traveled the continental United States with his wife Betty G. Guyer, whom he married on July 9, 1949. She preceded him in death on April 2, 2015.

In Eldon’s younger years he and his buddies owned/operated a car that they raced at the local dirt tracks. Eldon was the main mechanic and transporter. While raising a family on limited mean, he was considered a “Jack-of-all-trades” and could make cool things out of just about anything for his children’s entertainment. This made things easier for life around the family home. Eldon was very generous with his time and money towards his family. The same could be said towards total strangers who he would encounter and take the time to help while on his travels.

He was a member of the Messiah United Methodist Church and the Cumberland Valley Lodge #315 F & AM.
Eldon is survived by one daughter; Donna M. (Stephen) Rosenberry of Chambersburg; one son, Eldon Eugene Holtry, Jr., of Shermansdale; one sister, Janet Swartz of Shippensburg; five grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Bartlet, and a daughter in-law, Sue Holtry.
